Hikaru Matsumura's Craftsmanship
"52 BY HIKARUMATSUMURA" is designed by Hikaru Matsumura, who creates new aesthetic structures through designs that exist nowhere else in the world and innovative manufacturing methods.
Before designing a bag, Matsumura designs a "system." At the root of this idea is a philosophical approach to traditional Japanese craftsmanship, where forms are created based on modules (standard sizes), as seen in kimonos, tatami mats, and fusuma sliding doors.
In contrast to the Western idea of designing a form from the outside, the "process of serendipity" in creating forms from the constraints of combining modules has been a consistent theme.
The flexibility of replacing and reassembling, which is only possible because of the modular design, is also linked to "the brand's sustainable initiatives," reflecting a sincere and responsible approach to manufacturing.

Born in Tokyo in 1964.
After graduating from Musashino Art University, he worked as an assistant at the same university.
Graduated from the Paris Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne in 1993.
After working for Miyake Design Studio Inc. and ISSEY MIYAKE INC., he established HIKARU MATSUMURA DESIGN INC. in 2005.
He has been involved in various brands and design projects.
In 2017, he co-founded 52 DESIGN Inc.
The following year, he launched the product brand 52 BY HIKARUMATSUMURA.
